Direct Service vs Transshipment: What Is the Difference?

UNCTAD defines a direct connection as one that does not require transshipment of the container; the vessel may still stop at other ports between A and B. A rotation A–C–D–B remains direct for an A–B container if it stays on the same vessel.
2. Transshipment follows a hub-and-spoke design
The container reaches a hub on a feeder or mainline vessel, is discharged into the transshipment stack, waits for the connection and is loaded onto another vessel. This allows carriers to consolidate volume onto larger vessels and connect ports that cannot support a direct mainline service.
3. The main exposure is the connection
If the first vessel arrives late, the container may miss the planned connection. Lead time then depends on the next sailing, yard conditions, terminal capacity and loading priority. A high-frequency, well-operated hub can be more resilient than a hub with only one weekly onward sailing.
4. Direct is simpler, not disruption-proof
Direct service removes vessel-change risk but remains exposed to congestion, weather, blank sailings, port omissions, schedule recovery and rotation changes. Direct describes routing structure; it is not an unconditional ETA commitment.
