Wooden Pallet, Corrugated Carton or Wooden Crate: Which Packaging Should You Choose?
Corrugated cartons are light and economical, wooden pallets enable forklift handling, and wooden crates provide stronger protection but add weight and volume. Choosing only by packaging price can be costly: cartons may crush under stacking or humidity, a pallet does not shield cargo from impact, and an oversized crate can increase volumetric freight and trigger ISPM 15 requirements. The three options are also not mutually exclusive. A common optimum is products in cartons secured to a pallet, while heavy machinery or high-value irregular cargo may require a crate with a forkable skid. HOW THE PACKAGING SYSTEM WORKS
1. Cartons enclose, pallets support, crates protect structurally
The three options operate at different functional layers. Cartons normally surround a product or product group. Pallets create a forkable base and consolidate packages. Crates add a load-bearing protective frame around the cargo. The correct question is often not “which one only?” but “which layers are required and what risk must each layer control?”
2. Weight is not the only variable
Two 200 kg shipments may need different systems: twenty uniform component cartons may be palletized, while one 200 kg machine with an offset center of gravity may need a skid or crate. Fragile glass may require a crate despite low weight. Review piece weight, dimensions, center of gravity, fragility, compression strength, value and handling frequency together.
3. Transport mode changes the force profile
Road creates vibration and braking forces; ocean adds vessel motion, humidity and longer exposure; air imposes dimensional and handling constraints and possible tilting; LCL and express cargo may be transferred many times. Packaging must withstand handling as well as static warehouse loads.
4. Stackability directly affects freight efficiency
Flat, properly rated cartons can use space efficiently. Pallet overhang exposes cartons to impact and reduces their compression performance. A crate may be stackable only if the roof and frame are designed for the load; otherwise it may be treated as non-stackable and consume more freight space.
5. Natural wood adds phytosanitary controls
ISPM 15 covers raw-wood packaging such as pallets, crates and dunnage, while processed wood made pest-free by manufacture, such as plywood, is described as excluded. A mixed crate with plywood panels and solid-wood framing still requires the solid-wood components to be assessed. The mark does not provide permanent protection against reinfestation or contaminating organisms, so packaging must remain clean and free of visible pest evidence at handover.

FAQ
1. Must all heavy cargo be crated?
No. Multiple uniform cartons may be safely palletized. A crate is appropriate when mechanical protection, shape retention or an engineered lifting structure is required.
2. Do cartons on a pallet still need straps?
Usually a suitable containment system is needed, such as stretch wrap, edge boards and/or straps, depending on weight, surface friction, height and mode.
3. Can an ISPM 15 pallet be reused indefinitely?
No. It must remain structurally sound, correctly marked and free of visible reinfestation; repair, remanufacture or component replacement must follow the ISPM 15 control system under an entity authorized by the NPPO.
4. Does a plywood crate require ISPM 15?
Plywood is cited as processed wood that may be excluded, but solid-wood frames, skids or blocking in the same crate still need review.
5. How do I know whether a carton is stackable?
Use board specifications, load per carton, stack height, duration, humidity and package/route testing. ECT is an input, not an absolute guarantee.
6. Should ocean cargo use an open or closed crate?
Open crates protect structure and allow ventilation; closed crates provide more shielding. Moisture/corrosion control must be separately engineered.
7. How should the cheapest option be calculated?
Compare packaging, labour, weight/volume freight, handling, phytosanitary compliance, reuse and expected damage cost.
